†On March 3, 1954, Puerto Rican terrorists shot up the House of Representatives, seriously wounding a number of congressmen. Several days later, Hoover told McCarthy that an informant had learned from one of the terrorists that there was also a plan to assassinate McCarthy: “You were to be killed in Washington by an individual posing as a Western Union messenger who would appear at your hotel room,” but “if this plan fails an individual is to go to your room dressed in a bell boy’s uniform and kill you.”79
